Diabetes Research: Finding a Cure

Type 1 Diabetes Studies

Type 1 Diabetes Screening/Prevention Studies (for family members of people with T1D)

Study Title

Purpose

TrialNet Natural History Study: A Pathway to Prevention (Screening study)
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

Family members of a person with T1D are at higher risk to develop T1D than those without T1D in their family. We are currently screening relatives of people with T1D to find out if these family members are at risk well before symptoms appear. Those found to be at a higher risk can be entered into the monitoring stage of the study and may also qualify for T1D prevention studies.

TrialNet: Oral Insulin
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To determine if oral insulin will prevent or delay T1D in those at higher risk.

TrialNet: Anti-CD3
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To determine whether treatment with a medication (an investigational drug not approved by the FDA) will stop or slow down the onset of T1D in those at higher risk.

TrialNet: Abatacept
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To determine whether intervention with Abatacept (an investigational drug not approved by the FDA for use in T1D) will prevent or delay the development of T1D.

TrialNet: Long-Term Investigative Follow-Up (LIFT)
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To follow subjects from the Natural History, Oral Insulin and Anti-CD3 studies who developed T1D. The goal is to learn more about the transition from pre-T1D to diagnosis and/or to gather information about long-term effects of receiving an intervention through continued follow-up in treatment studies.

TrialNet: Dried Blood Spot Sub-study (DBS)
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To compare dried blood spot testing (DBS), obtaining blood from a finger with traditional blood testing using blood taken from a vein in testing for T1D risk.

Newly Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) (within 100 days)

Study Title

Purpose

Novartis (CAIN457A2227)
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To determine if an investigational drug (not approved by the FDA) can preserve the remaining beta cells of the pancreas in people diagnosed with T1D within the past 100 days (ages 8-35 years old).

People with Type 1 Diabetes

Study Title

Purpose

T1D Exchange Clinical Registry
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To help us learn more about Type 1 diabetes to improve diabetes treatment, management, and care. – Closed to enrollment, unless subject is eligible for another T1D Exchange study.

T1D Exchange: Residual C-Peptide
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To determine if those with T1D still have insulin production.– Closed to recruitment.

T1D Exchange: Severe Hypoglycemia in Older Adults with Type 1 Diabetes
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To find factors that are linked with severe low blood sugars in older adults (60 years or older) with T1D of long duration (20 years or more).

T1D Exchange: Metformin Therapy for Overweight Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To assess the effect and safety of Metformin (a drug currently approved by the FDA for patients with T2D) as an additional therapy in overweight children and adolescents with T1D.

Boost (NN5401-3816)
Primary Investigator- Henry Rodriguez, MD

To confirm the effectiveness of a new insulin combination administered once daily plus meal-time in children ages 1-<18 years old.
